Assessment Policy

Angel Kindergarten Assessment Policy

Our mission

To recognize and accept multiculturalism and multi-ethnicity

while having a sense of self-respect as a Japanese person.

We strive to nurture our students into becoming internationally minded

contributors of world peace.

This will be achieved through cultural, traditional, and nature experiences.

We strive to nurture our students into becoming

individuals with a good balance of:

a healthy body and a graceful heart.

a positive attitude towards inquiry.

becoming independent and developing resilience.

developing a deep and varied intellect.

We assess to confirm and understand what the students have learned.

Assessment is performed so the facilitators, the students themselves, and the parents know what the students have learned. By assessing their proficiency, we can adapt our way of teaching. We assess to grasp the student’s prior knowledge to the related unit, their degree of comprehension during a unit, and at the completion of a unit..

We will confirm the student’s proficiency numerous times during an activity or a unit through formative assessment. The summative assessment will conclude the student’s proficiency in their understanding of the unit of inquiry as a whole and will be used for reflection.

The assessment will also be an indicator of how to adjust our teaching during or after a unit. It also helps the facilitators to measure the students’ interest in the unit.

By assessing, we can see how well suited the unit is for the students. By looking at how much the students’ understanding have deepened, the assessment will also become evidence of the knowledge level in relation to the central idea.

We will assess the students’ level of achievement in relation to the lines of inquiry, comprehension level, knowledge level, way of thinking, their interest, their growth and development, acquired skills and applied skills. Furthermore, we will assess our planner, the facilitators’ guidance, and own reflections.

We will make a record of what the students achieve by evaluating their proficiency with different assessment tools such as observation, rubric, drawings and photos, continuums, portfolios, T-charts, venn diagrams, presentations, self and peer assessments and GRASPS.

This concludes Angel Kindergarten Assessment Standard.

Language Policy

Angel Kindergarten Language Policy

The Angel Kindergarten language policy was created by all facilitators. By allowing the facilitators to align to it, teaching will not differ thus giving the students the same opportunity for growth. The policy will also give the students the opportunity to come together towards a common goal to further develop of language, as well as giving the opportunity for understanding.

Angel Kindergarten believes that the purpose of language is to communicate with others; to express feelings, ideas and opinions. Because we are different from each other, we also recognize through language that our ideas and opinions aren’t always the same. It is important to respect every person’s different values, and by communicating these thoughts, we can create relationships and understanding. We then recognize that there is both commonality and diversity in language, and that they are essential parts of our lives.

Language comes in many forms. To speak, to listen, to read, to write, to sing, to draw, to play instruments, and body language. These are all parts of how we communicate. By developing meaning across the various forms, the students have the opportunity to communicate in different ways. It is important for students to have the opportunity to use a form of language which they can feel comfortable using when communicating their thoughts. It is equally necessary to develop skills that help us interpret the language as it is a requirement for us to create a mutual understanding.

It is our belief that international mindedness is essential for our students. We support them to become people who strive to make our world a better place. Therefore the language, and the relationships and understanding that comes with it, are important stepping stones towards becoming an international minded person.

One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.

-Frank Smith, To Think: In language, learning and education

Angel Kindergarten believes that it is important to join the global community, therefore English is a big part of our community. We recognize that thinking in different languages help us enhance our cognitive functions and linguistic skills. Therefore we use the natural approach - to teach English in English. English will be used regularly not only in the classroom but outside of the classroom as well to make authentic conversations to support the students in their language acquisition.

Angel Kindergarten believes in the importance of supporting a child’s mother tongue. This will be achieved through different means such as books, songs and genuine interest by the community.

It is our belief that the involvement of the guardians are integral to the students learning. Stakeholders are notified through various means of communication of what the students’ are learning and their progression. The guardians will then understand what language to use and to look for when communicating with the students. This will help the community as a whole because both students and guardians will have the opportunity to further develop.

This concludes Angel Kindergartens language policy.
